Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School 3rd through 8th gr Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School 3rd through 8th grade musicians have been hard at work! 🎶
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The Third Grade is beginning work on music literacy, recognizing open A, D and a whole assortment of rests. Happy Birthday is their latest project. Fourth Grade is working on the Tallis Canon, and starting Old Joe Clark, with its characteristic foot stomping energy. Fifth Grade is playing the melancholy By the Waters of Babylon and starting Pachelbel Canon. The Middle School orchestra is now split, which allows more room to breathe and move. The strings are working on a powerful piece called Boreas, about the cold north wind. Full orchestra including winds and percussion is learning the William Tell Overture.

We are currently lucky enough to have an amazing group of private teachers guiding our students. Huge thanks to them, and to our school families!

The Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program (FE The Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program (FEP) is now inviting applications for their summer learnerships/internships in entomology and botany, which will run from approximately late May to late August (exact dates flexible) with the possibility of an extension through November.

FEP is seeking 1 botany and 2 entomology learners/interns to assist with their applied farmscape ecology research, ecological consulting, and public outreach. Entomology-specific tasks will include collecting insects in the field using sweep nets and Malaise, vane, and pitfall traps, identifying insects in the lab using stereomicroscopes, and data entry. Botany-specific tasks include maintaining pollinator beds, beetle banks, hedgerows, native meadows, and a small native plant nursery, collecting data on the vegetation composition of experimental plantings, and monitoring a phenology trail. All interns will have opportunities to participate in public outreach by writing blog and social media posts and hosting public events.

Compensation is $1200/month and includes on-site housing (a small, private room with a shared kitchen and bathroom). Interested, or know someone who might be? Visit the link in our bio for more information, including instructions on how to apply.

Our latest blog post, "A Year in Review: Agricultu Our latest blog post, "A Year in Review: Agriculture & Production" is now live! As we begin a new year, we are thrilled to share with you reflections from Hawthorne Valley leaders to give you a glimpse into our work in 2022 through the lenses of Agriculture & Production, Education, Retail, and Art & Research.

These various reports were first shared in our Annual Impact Report. Read both the Annual Report and our Valley Voices blog by following the link in our bio.
Today is the first day of Lunar New Year, a multi- Today is the first day of Lunar New Year, a multi-day celebration that marks the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. The dates of lunisolar calendars indicate both the moon phase and the time of the solar year, which is the position of the sun in the Earth's sky.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gardening in harmony with nature’s rhythms, like integrating planting with the lunisolar calendar, has been practiced for thousands of years by many cultures, not just those who celebrate Lunar New Year. Biodynamics is one version of this practice, and builds on the concept of organic farming while combining it with ancient lunar planting methods as well as and the use of natural remedies and preparations. The first day of the Lunar New Year always begins with a new moon, which correlates with a fresh energetic start in addition to more activity underground in the soil and a lesser flow of sap in plants. Therefore, new moons are typically regarded as being good times for tasks like turning under green manure and cutting hay.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the Chinese zodiac, 2023 is the year of the rabbit and is predicted to be a year of hope. At Hawthorne Valley Farm, we are hopeful this lunar year will bring abundant harvests, peace amongst our livestock, and tranquility to the valley we share with native plants and animals 🌙

Episode 4 of Season 2 of our Roots to Renewal podc Episode 4 of Season 2 of our Roots to Renewal podcast highlights the work of Hawthorne Valley’s Farmscape Ecology Program. Their mission is to foster informed, active compassion for the ecological and cultural landscape of Columbia County, New York through participatory research and outreach.

In this episode Hawthorne Valley’s Executive Director, Martin Ping, sits down with two of the founders of the Farmscape Ecology Program – wildlife ecologist, Conrad Vispo and field botanist, Claudia Knab-Vispo. The two also happen to be partners in life. Claudia holds a PhD in Land Resources, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After working on plant-animal interactions in Borneo and on ethnobotany in Venezuela, she has spent more than two decades documenting and teaching about plants in and around Columbia County. Conrad, who grew up in Columbia County, holds a PhD in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin. Before returning to Columbia County, Conrad conducted ecological research on a variety of organisms, including mammals, birds and fish in a variety of places, including the woods of northern Wisconsin and tropical Venezuela. Conrad’s recent focus is on agroecology. His passion is understanding historical and modern patterns of animal (including human) ecology on the land.

The conversation is timely as the Farmscape Ecology Program team, together with Gretchen Stevens of Hudsonia, are about to release their new book (likely mid-year) entitled, “From the Hudson to the Taconics: An Ecological and Cultural Field Guide to the Habitats of Columbia County, New York.” The book is an invitation for people to explore the patterns in the landscape and make themselves more familiar with the other-than-human life that shares the land with us.
