Liesil welcomed a baby heifer today! The farm ha Liesil welcomed a baby heifer today!

The farm has been inundated with new life over the past few weeks in the form of several calves. But the reality is some of them have been hard labors, and a few stillborns. This lies on our hearts greatly, not for the loss and pain, but out of worry for the next cow that goes into labor. Luckily, Liesil needed no assistance and gave birth perfectly normally, and as of now, her heifer looks to be in good health! So, a small reprieve for the farmers as well ❤️🐄❤️ #cowednesday
Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a native holly Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a native holly found in forested and shrubby wetlands. At Hawthorne Valley, there are a few wetlands that support this species, and its red berries are a visual treat this time of year. Although the berries are poisonous to humans, they provide an important winter food source for birds and small mammals.

Year-round, we are thankful for the relationships Year-round, we are thankful for the relationships between living things on our farm and all around us. Our herd not only sustains us with milk and fertility for the land, but with warm companionship and purpose.

This season presented the farm with new challenges- wildfire smoke, torrential flooding and unpredictable dry spells. Each year we reflect on the past several months and say a thank you to whatever has helped us get through it. Many times it’s thanking the diverse bio regions on our farm that fortify our stream-beds during flooding, and often times it’s thanking many of you, our generous supporters for your contributions, in all their forms, to the farm. But without a gap, every year, the most thanks go to our farm staff. There aren’t enough words to describe the depths of what they do!

We wish you all a fulfilling and relaxing holiday with your loved ones. The Farm Store will be closed tomorrow in observance of Thanksgiving.
